Abstract:
The book is dedicated to the history of the foundation and development of the Main Astronomical Observatory (MAO) of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) of Ukraine. On the basis of archival information, the titanic efforts and perseverance of Academician O. Ya. Orlov are shown regarding the construction of an academic observatory according to the plan of the first President of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine V.I. Vernadskyi. The severe way of the Observatory from its creation to its present-day state is reflected. Its scientific achievements and discoveries are shown, together with the formation of the Ukrainian astronomical school.
The book tells us about the scientific work of several generations of astronomers. Among them were the dreamers of the beginning of the 20th century who believed in the greatness of science and science progress over the coming decades. Among them were also the people who made great efforts to build and develop the Observatory during the difficult post-war years. The book describes the activity of the next generations of Holosiiv astronomers and their scientific achievements on the way to international recognition of the MAO of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine as the leading astronomical institution of Ukraine.
In the third edition of the book, special attention is paid to highlighting the state and new challenges of the Main Astronomical Observatory of the NAS of Ukraine under conditions of the bloody war initiated by the Russian Federation against our state.
The book can be useful for scientists, teachers, graduate students, students of physics faculties of universities, as well as for everyone who is interested in the history of astronomy and in the contribution of Ukrainian scientists to the international development of astronomy.
