Abstract:
The monograph describes the metabolism of the main groups of algae substances valuable for biotechnology application: antioxidants (flavonoids, tocopherols), carotenoids, polysaccharides, biohydrogen and neutral lipids. Examples of the use of algae in biotechnology, obtaining certain groups of valuable substances are given. Metabolic processes responsible for the synthesis of certain classes of valuable substances, such as bioflavonoids, tocopherols, neutral lipids and polysaccharides are characterized. Particular attention is paid to obtaining the “ideal biofuel of the future”: biohydrogen. The use of genetic engineering methods to increase the yield of valuable substances is described. For a wide range of readers who are interested in the current state and prospects of using algae in biotechnology, obtaining valuable products of their metabolism.
Intended for students majoring in biotechnology and specialists who study the metabolism of algae.
