Abstract:

Yaroslava Muravetska, for the first time in Ukrainian literary studies, explores visual imagery in the fiction of I. Nechuy-Levytskyi. Also, using the example of his work, the researcher analyzes the poetics of realism in terms of the visual code.

The researcher outlines functioning of the «visuality» notion in modern literary science, develops the concept of realism at a literary and critical works of I. Nechui-Levytskyi. The role of visual strategies in the writer’s prose is emphasized and the place of visuality in his writing style is determined, as well as the creativity through the prism of visual imagery is considered. There have been characterized the peculiarities of portraying and landscape description and identified the intermedial forms of theatricalization and painterliness in I. Nechui-Levytskyi’s prose. The focus is made on visual representation of literary styles, in particular decadence, within the writer’s creativity, modern intermedial interpretations of I. Nechui-Levytskyi’s novel  “Kaidasheva simia” (“Kaidash’s Family”) have been analyzed in the context of visuality.

Yaroslava Muravetska applies the methodology of visual studies for the analysis of literature and demonstrates that literature can be an object for visual studies (1.1).

The researcher clarifies the individual features of Ivan Nechuy-Levytskyi’s style at the theoretical (1.2, 2.2.) and practical levels (sections 2, 3), and also analyses the presence of romantic, folkloric (1.2, 3.3.) and pre-impressionist (3.4.) features in the author’s style.

The author proves that the use of visuality in the writer’s prose is not limited to ethnography and everyday reality, but, in particular, serves to indirectly express the idea of ​​the work (chapters 2, 3).

The scientist gives attention to the use of visuality as a storytelling element (chapter 2), and studies the intermedial aspects of the interaction of visuality and literature (chapter 3.1, 3.2, 4). In particular, the scientist highlights the influence of theatrical (3.1) and pictorial (3.2) art on the stylistic, thematic, storytelling level of Ivan Nechuy-Levytskyi’s prose.

Finally, the researcher analyzes the impact of the writer’s story “The Kaidash Family” on more recent works by other authors, using the example of book illustrations, a film-diptych, and a play. The author focuses on the art of “translation” from “verbal” to “visual” language (chapter 4).
